ALLIGATORS
Take a good look at that log floating in a pond because, chances are, it’s not a log but an alligator. Alligators are indigenous to South Carolina and are found in lagoons, swamps and slow-moving streams. You will often see them sunning themselves on the banks of a lagoon. Do not go near them. Although they look like they are sleeping, they can move quickly and whatever you do, DO NOT feed or harass them.
PALMETTO BUGS
During your stay, you may encounter bugs that you have never seen before, the most common of which is the Palmetto Bug. These bugs live in palmetto trees and live oaks, not indoors. While Palmetto Bugs are native to the island, so are exterminators who conduct monthly Palmetto Bug termination treatments.
The bugs are approximately 2″ long and have a hard outer shell. They do not bite, can do you no harm, but they do fly. If you encounter one of these in your villa, it is because it has flown in from the trees…so please do not leave your sliding doors open and remember to close doors as soon as you enter or exit the doorways.
DOLPHINS
It is hard not to be fascinated by these intelligent creatures that are so prevalent in coastal South Carolina’s waters. You will probably see them just offshore at any beach that you go to during your stay. In addition, there are many dolphin-watching boat excursions that leave from the Bluewater Dock (see Activity and Recreation Reservations section), the Shelter Cove Marina and from Harbour Town in Sea Pines.
SEA TURTLES
These magnificent creatures are on the endangered species list. They build their nests on the beaches of South Carolina, instinctively returning to the place of their birth to lay their eggs. Oceanfront units and homes are required to curtail their use of lights after 10:00 p.m. during turtle nesting season.
Spinnaker Resorts is dedicated to the conservation and protection of our local waterways and marine ecosystems. Please help us keep prevent introducing invasive species from any other location into our protected waterways by following the recommended boat preparation guidelines, including all fishing and recreational equipment, such as rods, holding wells, tubes, water skis and wake boards for example.
Please review the Preparation Guidelines to follow before putting your boat, water recreation equipment and fishing gear in to the local waterways.

We would like to ask that you review the following information in the event the Island is evacuated due to an approaching Hurricane.
1) Please place all patio/deck furniture and unsecured items in the villa.
2) Please close all draperies and blinds and lock all windows and doors upon departure.
Under South Carolina law, if a hurricane threatens Hilton Head Island, the Local Government will first issue a Voluntary Evacuation Order. At that time, Southwind Management will request that all Owners and Guests leave the resort in order to allow staff to prepare for the impending hurricane.
If the Governor issues a Mandatory Evacuation Order, all Residents and Visitors to the island are required to leave the island immediately and will not be able to return until the storm passes and local authorities allow re-entry to the island.
After the storm has passed and the Governor rescinds the Evacuation Order, call toll-free (800) 963-5023 for re-entry information.
When a storm is approaching the Island, you should listen to radio stations WGCO 98.3 FM, WYKZ 98.7 FM, WLOW 107.9 FM or watch the Weather Channel on Channel 6 for emergency information and instructions.

Hilton Head Island evacuees will use both the William Hilton Parkway (US 278 Business) and the Cross Island Parkway toll facility (US 278).
As these two roads merge, a third lane will be formed by reversing flow on the inside eastbound lane of US 278. This lane will carry the traffic from the toll facility.
When US 278 reaches I-95, lane assignments will be as follows:
1. The right lane on westbound US 278 will exit to I-95 northbound.
2. The left lane on US 278 westbound will continue on US 278 towards the city of Hampton and eventually to the city of North Augusta.
3. The reversed lane will take SC 46 to US 321, then to SC 3 to SC 125 and onto North Augusta.
Should a third lane not be necessary, then both lanes on US 278 will be routed to I-95 with the right lane to I-95 N then left lane continues on US 278.
(Note – during storms approaching from Florida and/or Georgia coastal areas, authorities may restrict access to most southbound interstates including I-95 S)

RE-ENTRY HOTLINE (800) 963-5023
Check the local and state news sources for re-entering information.
If the Island is open for re-entry, please call your property location for specific information regarding your villa.
However, please consider there could be limited facilities open on the Island.
Due to the heavy tree cover and vegetation on the Island, it could take several days before the Island is back to operating at normal levels.
As you enjoy your stay, please be aware that Hilton Head Island is home to a variety of native wildlife, including snakes, alligators, and other animals such as raccoons and turtles. These animals are an important part of the natural environment and may occasionally be seen on or near resort grounds, sidewalks, and shaded areas.
Sightings—particularly of snakes and alligators—tend to increase during warmer months. For your safety, we kindly ask that you stay alert when walking outdoors. Please remain on designated sidewalks and paths whenever possible, especially during early morning or evening hours when visibility is lower.
If you do encounter any wildlife, do not attempt to approach or disturb it. Maintain a safe distance and allow the animal to move along on its own.
Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe while respecting the beautiful Lowcountry ecosystem. We hope you have a wonderful and memorable vacation.
We hope you won’t need any first aid while visiting Hilton Head Island.
If you do have any of the following problems, the tabs in this section may help ease the pain.
In case of any emergency please dial 9+911 if you are calling from your villa phone.
Do NOT go near alligators.
Do NOT feed or tease them! Alligators can outrun a human for 25 yards.
If you encounter an alligator lazing in the sun quickly and quietly go the other way.
Apply vinegar, sugar, salt or dry sand to jelly fish stings.
Lifeguards keep a bottle of vinegar solution to spray on stings.
Meat tenderizer works well too.
After 20 minutes, rinse with salt water.
Be aware that sting rays also enjoy the surf, so watch your step and “shuffle” aside if you spot one nearby.
Oyster shells and barnacles are often attached to dock pilings.
Cuts and abrasions can result in serious infections.
Clean the wound with peroxide.
Medical treatment is advised.
Call 9+911, some local snakes are poisonous and their bites can be deadly.
Use a compression dressing just above the bite, NOT a tourniquet.
Please be aware that the island is home to copperheads, cottonmouths (water moccasins), and the rare rattlesnake or coral snake are occasionally sighted.
First aid for sunburn includes the following:
Take a pain reliever. Use a nonprescription pain reliever as soon as possible after getting too much sun. Examples are ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) and acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Or try a gel pain reliever that you rub on the skin.
Cool the skin. Apply to the affected skin a clean towel dampened with cool tap water. Or take a cool bath. Add about 2 ounces (60 grams) of baking soda to the tub. Cool the skin for about 10 minutes several times a day.
Apply a moisturizer, lotion or gel. An aloe vera lotion or gel or calamine lotion can be soothing. Try cooling the product in the refrigerator before applying. Avoid products with alcohol.
Drink extra water for a day. This helps prevent dehydration.
Leave blisters alone. An intact blister can help the skin heal. If a blister does break, trim off the dead skin with a clean, small scissors. Gently clean the area with mild soap and water. Then apply an antibiotic ointment to the wound and cover it with a nonstick bandage.
Protect yourself from the sun. While your skin heals from the sunburn, stay out of the sun or use other sun-protection measures.
Apply a soothing medicated cream. For mild to moderate sunburn, apply nonprescription 1% hydrocortisone cream to the affected area three times a day for three days. Try cooling the product in the refrigerator before applying.
Treat sunburned eyes. Apply a clean towel dampened with cool tap water. Don’t wear contacts until your eye symptoms have gone away. Don’t rub your eyes.
Look for warning signs of red flags before entering the surf.
Absence of flags does not assure safe waters
Discuss surf conditions with beach attendants or check on advisories by calling the National Weather Service or clicking on the link in the next section “NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE”.
Do not swim alone and avoid swimming too far from shore.
Do not dive into the ocean unless you know the water depth.
Be especially cautious when the surf is high.

To take care of a tick bite:
Remove the tick promptly and carefully. Use fine-tipped forceps or tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Gently pull out the tick using a slow and steady upward motion. Avoid twisting or squeezing the tick. Do not handle the tick with bare hands. Do not use petroleum jelly, fingernail polish or a hot match to remove a tick.
Secure the tick and take a picture. A picture of the tick can help you and your health care provider identify what type it is and whether you are at risk of a transmitted disease. You can trap the tick in a piece of tape for disposal in the garbage. Your provider may want to see the tick or a photo if you develop new symptoms.
Wash your hands and the bite site. Use warm water and soap, rubbing alcohol, or an iodine scrub.
